Toothpaste has to be slightly rough. Something in it must scrub away film and stains. Calcium carbonate, the mineral in limestone, is a common choice.
It is hard enough to polish and soft enough to leave the enamel alone. It also gives the paste its body and part of its whiteness.
Worth knowing
Particle size decides everything here. Too fine and it does not clean. Too coarse and it scratches. The calcium carbonate that goes into toothpaste is made to a far tighter size range than the kind that goes under a road.
