What cleans your drinking water?

Treated long before it reaches your tap.
Dr. Lime Explains

Before anything else, lime.

The water in your tap did not arrive ready to drink. Out of a river or a borewell it carries silt, bacteria and dissolved metals.

Lime raises the pH of the water. That makes the fine particles clump together and sink, so they can be removed. Lime also softens hard water, and protects the pipes it travels through.

Almost every large treatment plant uses it.

Worth knowing
Lime does the same job in the other direction. Sewage and factory effluent are treated with lime before they are released, to neutralise the acid and drop out heavy metals. The same material cleans the water going in and the water going out.
